Xbox Game Bar recording corrupted? Fix Windows game clips

By the FixMP4 engineering team · · 5 min read

The Xbox Game Bar built into Windows 10 and 11 records games and apps with Win+Alt+R (start/stop) and saves clips as MP4. When a game crashes, Windows freezes or the PC restarts mid-recording, the clip may be missing or refuse to open.

Where the clips are

By default: C:\Users\[you]\Videos\Captures. Check Settings, Gaming, Captures for the current folder (it may have been moved to another drive). Sort by date modified and look for large files without thumbnails.

Why clips break

Game Bar records H.264 (or HEVC on some configurations) with AAC audio into MP4 and writes the index, the moov atom, when you stop. If the game crashes and takes the graphics driver with it, Windows restarts for an update, the disk fills, or power drops, the index is never written. The file has the frames but no table of contents. Background: what is the moov atom.

Fix a broken clip

  1. Make a reference: record ten seconds of the same game with the same Game Bar settings (Settings, Gaming, Captures: video frame rate 30 or 60 fps, video quality Standard or High, audio quality). Ten seconds of the desktop works if the resolution is the same.
  2. Open the repair tool, add the broken MP4 and the reference.
  3. Check the free preview, then export with a subscription.

NVIDIA, AMD and other recorders

  • NVIDIA ShadowPlay / NVIDIA App (Alt+F9, Alt+Z): MP4 with H.264 or HEVC; AV1 on recent GPUs. H.264 and HEVC clips are supported; AV1 is not.
  • AMD Software (ReLive): MP4 with H.264 or HEVC (AV1 on recent cards). Same rule.
  • Steam game recording: uses its own segmented format managed by Steam; export clips from Steam.
  • OBS Studio: see recover an OBS recording.

Make the reference with the same recorder and encoder; NVIDIA and AMD encoders produce different streams.

Instant replay that was never saved

"Record what happened" and instant replay keep the last minutes in a temporary buffer. If you never pressed save, or the PC crashed first, that buffer is usually gone. Nothing to repair there.

Variable frame rate

Game recordings can drop frames under load. After a rebuild, frames are timed at the configured rate, so heavy frame drops can make short sections play slightly fast. Audio is measured from the AAC data and stays correct; see audio out of sync after repair if you notice drift.

Checking the repaired clip

Play the repaired clip from start to end in VLC or the Windows Media Player app. Smooth motion and clear sound mean success. Blocky frames throughout mean the reference used a different encoder or resolution: on laptops with two GPUs, Game Bar may encode with the integrated GPU for one recording and the dedicated GPU for another, so record the reference while running the same game in the same mode. If the clip ends earlier than you expected, the recording stopped writing at that point, often when the game froze.

Prevention

  • Record to an SSD with plenty of space, not a nearly full system drive.
  • Keep graphics drivers updated; driver crashes are a common cause.
  • Set Windows Update active hours so it does not restart during sessions.
  • For long sessions, OBS with MKV or hybrid MP4 is more crash-tolerant.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Xbox Game Bar save recordings?

By default in Videos, Captures in your user folder. You can see and change the folder under Settings, Gaming, Captures.

Why is my Game Bar clip corrupted?

The game or Windows crashed, the disk filled, or the PC lost power before the MP4 index was written.

Can NVIDIA or AMD recordings be repaired too?

Yes, if they are H.264 or HEVC MP4 files with AAC audio. AV1 recordings are not supported.

Have a broken recording right now?

Diagnose it and hear or watch a free repaired preview. Nothing is uploaded.
