How to prevent corrupted recordings: a checklist for every device
By the FixMP4 engineering team · · 7 min read
Most corrupted recordings are not random. They happen when recording ends in a way the device did not plan for, so the file's index (its moov atom) never gets written. That means most of them are preventable with a few habits. Here is the checklist we would give a friend, grouped by what actually goes wrong.
1. Power: never let recording end because the battery did
- Charge before important recordings and carry spares for cameras and drones.
- Cold drains batteries fast. Keep spares in an inside pocket; a GoPro or drone battery at -5 °C can lose a third of its runtime.
- Do not trust the last 10%. Many devices shut down abruptly rather than closing the file when voltage drops under load.
- Phones: recording 4K while fast-charging in a hot car invites thermal shutdowns.
- Dashcams: prefer supercapacitor models and a proper hardwire kit, so the camera has time to close the last clip when the engine stops.
2. Storage: leave room and use the right card
- Keep free space. A phone with 1 GB free cannot finish a long 4K recording.
- Use the right speed class (V30 for most 4K, V60/V90 for high bit rates, high-endurance cards for dashcams).
- Buy from reputable sellers. Counterfeit cards report a large capacity but silently discard data beyond their real size. Test new cards with H2testw (Windows) or F3 (Mac/Linux).
- Format in the device, not on a computer, and do so regularly.
- Replace cards that show errors, and replace dashcam cards every 12 to 24 months.
More on cards: recover video from a corrupted SD card.
3. Stopping: let the file close
- Stop recording before switching off. Pressing power while recording is risky on many cameras.
- Wait for the access light to go out before removing a card or battery.
- Eject drives properly after copying; pulling a USB stick mid-write truncates files.
- On phones, do not force-quit the camera app during recording.
4. Settings that reduce risk
| Device or app | Safer setting |
|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Record to MKV (auto-remux to MP4) or hybrid MP4 |
| Long camera recordings | Let the camera split into chapters; only the last chapter is at risk |
| Phones | Stay below the maximum resolution if storage is tight |
| Drones | Start a new recording periodically during risky flying |
| Zoom | Keep the laptop plugged in until conversion finishes |
| Voice Memos | Keep the phone charged for long lectures; check iCloud sync |
Why MKV helps: OBS recording corrupted after a crash.
5. Heat
Long 4K, 5K or 8K takes heat cameras and phones. Many shut down to protect themselves, and some do not close the file first. Shade the device, remove cases, use external power where supported, and watch for temperature warnings.
6. Copies and backups
- Copy important footage as soon as possible, ideally to two places.
- Check that copies play before formatting the card.
- Keep the original card untouched after a failure until you have recovered what you need.
7. Know your recovery path in advance
Even with good habits, things break. Knowing what to do keeps a small problem small:
- Stop using the card or device.
- Let the device try its own recovery (many cameras close unfinished files at power-on).
- Copy everything to a computer.
- Record a short reference clip with the same settings; see how to choose a reference file.
- Rebuild the broken file in the repair tool and check the free preview.

The one-line version
Power, space, cards, and a clean stop. Get those four right and you will rarely need a repair tool, and when you do, the file will almost always be fixable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common cause of corrupted video?
Recording that ends abruptly, through a dead battery, a crash, a full card or a removed card, so the file index is never written.
Do cheap SD cards cause corrupted videos?
Yes, slow or counterfeit cards can drop data or stop recording. Use cards from reputable sellers that meet your device's speed class.
Which recording format is safest against crashes?
Formats that do not depend on an index written at the end, such as MKV, fragmented MP4 or OBS hybrid MP4.
