How to fix a corrupted Insta360 video

For Insta360 cameras, try the official repair path first: put the card back in the camera or open the file in the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio, which can fix many interrupted recordings. If you are left with a broken file, what you can do depends on the mode. Single-lens and flat (non-360) recordings saved as standard MP4 with H.264 or H.265 can have their index rebuilt with FixMP4 using a reference recorded in the same mode. Dual-lens 360 .insv files use Insta360's own layout and are not supported by FixMP4. You can test any file for free in the repair tool.

Names differ slightly between the ONE X, X2, X3, X4, ONE RS, GO 2, GO 3 and Ace series, but the principle holds: 360 recordings rely on Insta360 software to stitch, and the stitching software expects Insta360's own structure.

Why Insta360 files break

Like other action cameras, Insta360 cameras write frames continuously and finalise the file when recording stops. Battery depletion, overheating on long high-resolution 360 recordings, a full or slow card, or a crash stops recording before the file is finalised. Small cameras such as the GO series can also stop when they lose contact with their Action Pod.

Step 1: use Insta360's own repair

  1. Insert the card in the same camera and power on; some models finish interrupted files at startup.
  2. Open the recording in the Insta360 app or in Insta360 Studio on a computer. Both offer a repair option for damaged or incomplete files on many models; follow the prompt.
  3. Keep the original files untouched until the repair has worked.

This is the best route for .insv 360 files, because Insta360 software understands its own metadata (gyroscope data for FlowState stabilisation, lens calibration and stitching parameters).

Step 2: single-lens and flat MP4 files

If you recorded in single-lens mode, or the camera saved a standard MP4, the file is an ordinary MP4 with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. When its index is missing, rebuild it:

  1. Record a ten-second reference on the same camera in the same mode, resolution, frame rate, codec (H.264 or H.265) and colour profile (Standard or I-Log/Log, if available).
  2. Open the repair tool, add the broken file and the reference.
  3. Check the free preview, then export with a subscription.

What you lose

FlowState stabilisation and horizon levelling depend on gyroscope data that Insta360 stores alongside the video. A rebuilt flat MP4 contains the video and audio as recorded; stabilisation that the camera applied in-camera is baked in, but stabilisation that the app would have applied afterwards needs the gyro data and may not be available for the rebuilt file. This is a limitation worth knowing before you rely on the result.

How the rebuild works

FixMP4 reads the broken MP4's media data directly from your disk inside the browser, identifies each H.264 or HEVC frame by its NAL unit structure, parses each AAC audio frame to measure its length, and writes a new index with sizes, positions, timing, B-frame reordering and keyframes. The parameter sets that describe the stream come from your reference clip. Nothing is re-encoded and nothing is uploaded.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a dual-lens .insv file to be repaired by a generic MP4 tool; it needs Insta360 software.
  • Recording the reference in 360 mode for a single-lens clip, or the other way round.
  • Clearing the card or the app cache before trying Insta360's repair.

Checking the result

Play the full repaired MP4 in VLC and in the editor you plan to use. A clean preview with smooth motion means the export matches it. Blocky frames throughout point to a reference recorded in a different mode or codec; record a new reference and try again, since previews are free. A short freeze followed by normal playback means damaged data at that spot on the card. If your project relies on reframing in the Insta360 app, keep in mind that the rebuilt file behaves like a normal flat video in editors rather than an Insta360 project file.

When nothing works

  • If a file is 0 KB, no data was written; try a data recovery tool on the card (recovering video from a corrupted SD card).
  • If the app's repair fails on a 360 file, contact Insta360 support with the original file; they can sometimes recover files that the app cannot.
  • If you exported a reframed MP4 earlier, that export is a complete, independent copy.

Prevention

  • Use V30 or faster cards from Insta360's recommended list and format in camera.
  • Keep the camera ventilated during long 5.7K or 8K 360 recordings.
  • Carry spare batteries, and avoid letting the GO series disconnect from its pod mid-recording.
  • Update camera firmware and the app.

Frequently asked questions

Can FixMP4 repair Insta360 .insv files?

No. Dual-lens 360 .insv files use Insta360's own layout and need the Insta360 app or Studio. Single-lens and flat recordings saved as standard MP4 files with H.264 or H.265 are supported.

Does Insta360 have its own repair feature?

Yes. The Insta360 app and Insta360 Studio can repair many interrupted recordings, and some cameras finish incomplete files when powered on with the card inserted.

Will FlowState stabilisation work on a repaired file?

Not necessarily. Post-stabilisation needs gyro data that a generic MP4 rebuild does not restore. In-camera stabilisation already baked into the video is kept.

What reference should I record?

A short clip on the same camera in the same mode, resolution, frame rate, codec and colour profile as the broken recording.
