How to fix a corrupted GoPro video

To fix a corrupted GoPro video, first put the card back in the same camera and power it on so the camera can run its own repair (the SOS / repair icon). If that fails, copy the file to a computer and rebuild its MP4 index from a 5-second reference clip recorded on the same GoPro with identical resolution, frame rate, lens and codec settings. That second step is exactly what the FixMP4 repair tool does, in your browser, with a free preview.

This page is the GoPro-specific reference: which models and settings matter, how GoPro names its files, and what you can and cannot get back. For the story-style walkthrough, read our blog post on GoPro files that won't play.

Why GoPro files break

Every GoPro since the HERO5 records standard MP4: H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC) video, AAC audio, plus a timecode track and a GPMF telemetry track (GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope). Like almost every camera, the GoPro writes frames continuously and writes the index, the moov atom, when you stop recording. A battery that dies in the cold, an overheating shutdown, a freeze, a full card or a knock that ejects the battery all leave a file with frames but no index. Players then report "moov atom not found", "unsupported file" or a duration of 0:00. More background: what the moov atom is.

GoPro splits long recordings into chapters of roughly 4 GB. Only the chapter that was being written when the failure happened has a missing index. Repair that one; the others open normally.

Step 1: let the camera try (free)

  1. Insert the same card into the same camera with a charged battery.
  2. Power on. Many models show a repair or SOS icon while they close the unfinished file.
  3. Wait until the camera is idle, then power off normally and copy the files.

Do not format, do not record, and do not let your computer "scan and fix" the card first: file system repair can truncate the unfinished file.

Step 2: build a matching reference clip

The decoder settings that were lost with the index come from a reference recorded with identical settings. Match these on the same camera:

SettingWhy it matters
Resolution (5.3K, 4K, 2.7K, 1080)Changes the stream parameters
Frame rate (24 to 240 fps)Changes timing and GOP structure
Lens / digital lens (Wide, Linear, SuperView, HyperView)Changes the encoded frame size
Codec (HEVC vs H.264, set by "High Efficiency" or bit-rate options)Must match exactly
Bit rate (Standard / High)Affects encoder profile
10-bit and GP-Log (HERO11 and later)Changes the bit depth and profile
HypersmoothUsually not critical, but match it if possible

Five seconds is enough. If you are unsure which settings were used, open an intact clip from the same day in VLC (Tools, Codec Information) and compare. See how to choose a reference file.

Step 3: rebuild the index

Drop the broken chapter and the reference into the repair tool. FixMP4 scans every H.264 or HEVC frame and every AAC audio frame, rebuilds the index, and plays a free preview. Export the full file with a subscription. The file is never uploaded; even 4 GB chapters are read straight from your disk.

What you get back, model by model

ModelTypical formatResult
HERO5 to HERO8H.264 or HEVC MP4Video and audio recovered
HERO9 to HERO13HEVC (often), H.264 at some settingsVideo and audio recovered
HERO11+ with 10-bit / GP-LogHEVC Main 10Recovered; reference must also be 10-bit
MAX / Fusion (360 .360 files)Dual-stream 360 formatNot supported
Any model, telemetryGPMF trackNot rebuilt (no GPS overlays for that clip)
Any model, timecode tracktmcdNot rebuilt

You usually lose only the final second, which was still in the camera's buffer. The LRV proxy remains a useful fallback if the main file is beyond repair.

Reading the preview

A clean preview with smooth motion and synced sound means the full export will match it. Grey or green blocks mean a settings mismatch, most often HEVC against H.264 or a different lens mode. A picture that freezes for a moment and then recovers points to damaged data at that spot on the card, which no tool can recreate; the frames after the next keyframe are fine.

When repair will not help

  • 0 KB files: nothing was written. Use a recovery tool on the card; see recovering video from a corrupted SD card.
  • Card not detected: hardware failure; stop and consider a recovery lab.
  • Clip plays in VLC but not in Windows Photos: missing HEVC codec, not corruption.

Prevent the next one

Use a card from GoPro's recommended list, format it in the camera, keep spare batteries warm in the cold, avoid long 5K recordings in direct sun on older models, and update firmware. Stop recording before you switch off.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix a GoPro video that will not play?

Insert the card in the same camera and power on to let it repair the file. If that fails, rebuild the MP4 index with FixMP4 using a short reference clip recorded on the same GoPro with the same resolution, frame rate, lens and codec.

Which GoPro chapter is corrupted?

Usually only the last chapter of an interrupted recording, for example GX030123.MP4 when the recording was cut off during its third chapter. Earlier chapters were closed normally.

Are GoPro GPS and telemetry data recovered?

No. Video and audio are rebuilt; the GPMF telemetry and timecode tracks are not, so GPS overlays will not work for the repaired clip.

Can FixMP4 repair GoPro MAX 360 files?

No. The .360 dual-stream format is not supported. Standard MP4 files from HERO cameras are supported.
