Wedding or event video corrupted? A calm, step-by-step plan

By the FixMP4 engineering team · · 6 min read

Some recordings cannot be repeated: a wedding ceremony, a speech, a graduation, a birth, a parent's last birthday. When that file will not play, panic leads to the mistakes that make recovery harder. Here is a calm plan.

The first hour

  1. Stop recording on that card and remove it from the camera.
  2. Do not format it, even if the camera or computer asks you to.
  3. Do not run "repair disk" tools on the card.
  4. Copy everything to a computer with a card reader, including folders that seem irrelevant.
  5. If the card shows errors or will not mount, stop and read the card section below.

Look for other copies

Events are usually recorded by more than one device:

  • A second camera, a phone on a tripod, a guest's phone.
  • The venue's or band's recording, the livestream archive, a sound recorder for speeches.
  • A dual-slot camera that wrote to both cards.
  • Proxy files written alongside the main recordings.

Collect them now, before they are deleted.

Test the broken file

Check its size. A large file that shows 0:00 or will not open usually means the recording was cut off (battery, full card, overheating) before the index was written. That is the most common and the most fixable case. Our explainer: why recordings get corrupted.

A 0-byte file contains nothing; recovery would have to happen on the card. See MP4 is 0 bytes.

Repair a cut-off recording

  1. Record a reference with the same camera and identical settings (resolution, frame rate, codec, picture profile). See how to choose a reference file.
  2. Open the repair tool on a computer. Nothing is uploaded, which matters for private family footage.
  3. Add the broken file and the reference, and watch the free preview of your own recording.
  4. Export the full file when it looks right.

If the card is the problem

If the card will not mount, shows as unformatted, or files are missing:

  • Image the card first (ddrescue) if you can, then work on the image.
  • Use a recovery tool such as PhotoRec on the image, recovering to another drive; see recover video from a corrupted SD card.
  • For physically failed cards or truly irreplaceable footage, a professional recovery lab is worth the cost. Stop experimenting first; every attempt on a failing card risks more damage.

Audio from separate recorders

Speeches and vows are often recorded on a separate audio recorder or lavalier. If the video's sound is missing or damaged after repair (some cameras record PCM audio that is not rebuilt), sync the separate audio in an editor.

Professionals: tell the client early

If you are the videographer, tell the couple what happened, what you are doing, and when you will know more. Clients are far more understanding of a clear plan than of silence.

Prevention for the next event

  • Use dual-slot recording when the camera has it.
  • Use fresh, genuine, fast cards; see fake SD cards.
  • Charge and rotate batteries before key moments; stop and restart recording between parts of the day.
  • Run a second camera or phone on critical moments.
  • Offload and verify cards the same night.

Our prevention checklist covers everyday habits.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first when an event video will not play?

Stop using the camera card, do not format it, and copy everything to a computer. Then check for other copies and test the file.

Can a corrupted wedding video be recovered?

Often. Most event recordings that break are cut off by a battery or card problem, leaving the frames intact without an index, which can be rebuilt.

Should I send the card to a recovery lab?

If the card is not readable at all or the footage is irreplaceable and other steps fail, yes. Do not keep experimenting on a failing card.

Have a broken recording right now?

Diagnose it and hear or watch a free repaired preview. Nothing is uploaded.
