How to recover a Zoom recording that failed to convert
When a Zoom local recording fails to convert, the meeting is usually still in the temporary .zoom files in your Zoom recording folder. Reopen Zoom or double-click the "double_click_to_convert" file to run Zoom's converter, keep the computer awake and plugged in until it finishes, and check the host's cloud recordings as well. A repair tool only helps when Zoom produced an MP4 or M4A that is cut off or shows 0:00: then the audio or video frames are present and the index can be rebuilt. FixMP4 handles that last case in your browser with a free preview; it cannot read .zoom files.
What Zoom writes during a meeting
| File | When | Can FixMP4 help? |
|---|---|---|
| double_click_to_convert_01.zoom (and similar) | During the meeting | No; use Zoom's converter |
| video1234567890.mp4 / zoom_0.mp4 | After conversion | Yes, if cut off |
| audio1234567890.m4a / audio_only.m4a | After conversion | Yes, if cut off (no reference usually needed) |
| Audio Record folder (per-participant .m4a) | If enabled | Yes, each file separately |
| chat.txt / meeting_saved_chat.txt | After the meeting | Plain text |
Default folder: Documents/Zoom on Windows and macOS, inside a subfolder named after the meeting date and topic. Settings, Recording shows the exact path.
Step-by-step recovery
- Copy the whole meeting folder to a safe place first.
- Free up disk space. Conversion needs room for the output, often several gigabytes for long video meetings.
- Reopen Zoom. It usually detects the unconverted recording and offers to convert it.
- Or double-click the .zoom file named double_click_to_convert. That starts the converter for that meeting.
- Keep the computer awake and on mains power until conversion reaches 100%.
- Update Zoom and retry if the converter shows an error.

Check the cloud
Paid Zoom accounts can record to the cloud. Cloud recordings belong to the host's account, even if you started recording, so the host should check Recordings in the Zoom web portal. Cloud recordings take time to process after long meetings; Zoom emails the host when they are ready.
When an MP4 or M4A exists but is broken
If conversion was interrupted, you may get an MP4 that will not open or an M4A that shows 0:00. These files contain converted frames but no index. To rebuild:
- Audio-only M4A: drop it into the repair tool on its own. AAC audio frames can be identified and measured directly, so a reference is usually not needed.
- Video MP4: also add a reference: a short local recording made on the same computer with the same Zoom version and recording settings. A 30-second test meeting with yourself works well. Keep the same layout options (active speaker, gallery view, shared screen) and the same "optimise for 3rd party video editor" setting if you changed it.
Check the free preview, then export with a subscription. For interviews and lectures, the audio file is often what matters most, and it is the easiest one to recover.
Can the .zoom files be repaired directly?
Not by FixMP4 or by generic video tools: the temporary files use Zoom's own format, and only Zoom's converter can turn them into MP4 and M4A. If the converter repeatedly fails on files that are clearly large, contact Zoom support with the folder; do not rename or edit the .zoom files.
How the M4A and MP4 rebuild works
For audio, FixMP4 walks through the file's media data and parses each AAC frame to find its exact length, then writes a new index with every frame's size, position and timing; the AudioSpecificConfig is inferred or taken from a reference. For video, H.264 frames are recognised by their NAL unit structure and the stream parameters come from the reference recording. No frame is re-encoded and the file never leaves your computer, which matters for confidential meetings.
Checking the recovered recording
After conversion or repair, play the file from the beginning, jump to the middle and then to the end. A recording that stops early means conversion was interrupted at that point; running the converter again on the original .zoom files is worth trying before you rely on a partial result.
Common mistakes
- Moving or renaming the .zoom files before conversion; keep the folder structure as Zoom created it.
- Running the converter with almost no free disk space; it fails or produces a cut-off MP4.
- Letting a laptop sleep or a cloud-sync client lock files in the middle of conversion.
- Deleting the .zoom files after a conversion that looked finished without checking the result plays to the end.
- Searching the participant's computer for a cloud recording that lives in the host's account.
Similar situations
- Microsoft Teams and Google Meet record to the cloud; check the meeting chat, OneDrive or Google Drive.
- Webex local recordings use their own format (.arf or .wrf on older versions) and need Webex tools.
- Screen recorders that save MP4 directly (OBS, QuickTime, Windows Game Bar) can be repaired like any cut-off MP4; see recover an OBS recording.
Prevention
- Keep laptops plugged in during and after long recordings, and disable sleep until conversion finishes.
- Record locally to an internal disk, not a cloud-synced folder that may lock the files.
- Enable "Record a separate audio file for each participant" for interviews.
- Use cloud recording for important meetings when your plan allows it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Zoom recording manually?
Open the meeting folder in Documents/Zoom and double-click the double_click_to_convert file, or reopen Zoom and accept the offer to convert. Keep the computer awake until it finishes.
Can FixMP4 repair .zoom files?
No. Only Zoom's converter can read them. FixMP4 can repair an MP4 or M4A that Zoom produced but that was cut off.
Where are Zoom cloud recordings?
In the host's account on the Zoom web portal under Recordings.
Do I need a reference file for a Zoom M4A?
Usually not. AAC audio can be rebuilt on its own. Video MP4 files need a short reference recording from the same computer and Zoom settings.
