How to fix a corrupted Premiere Pro export

If Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut crashed during export, the best fix is to export again: the project and source media are intact, and a fresh export is perfect. Repair is only worth it when the project or sources are gone and the partial MP4 is all you have. In that case, the file contains every frame encoded before the crash but no index; rebuild it from a short export made with the same preset. The FixMP4 repair tool does this in your browser with a free preview.

First, rule out a playback problem

Many "corrupted" exports are fine files that a particular player cannot handle:

Why a crashed export has no index

Premiere and Media Encoder write the encoded frames into the MP4 as they render, and write the moov atom index once rendering is complete (and, with "fast start" enabled, they rewrite the file to move it to the front). A crash, a full disk, a GPU driver reset during hardware encoding, or a sleep or shutdown mid-export prevents that final step. The file then contains frames without a table of contents.

The best fix: export again

  1. Free disk space on the export drive: at least the expected file size plus headroom.
  2. Restart Premiere and Media Encoder; update the GPU driver if hardware encoding crashed.
  3. If hardware encoding (NVENC, QuickSync, AMF) keeps crashing, switch Encoding Settings to software encoding for this export.
  4. Render previews or export in parts (In/Out ranges) to isolate a clip or effect that triggers the crash.
  5. Disable sleep until the export finishes.

When you cannot re-export

If the project file is corrupted, the sources are deleted, or a client sent you only a broken file:

  1. Make a reference export: a five-second export with the same preset and settings (codec H.264 or HEVC, resolution, frame rate, profile and level, bit depth, hardware or software encoding). If the original project is gone, use any short sequence with the same settings.
  2. Open the repair tool and add the broken MP4 plus the reference.
  3. Check the free preview, then export the full file with a subscription.

You get every frame that was encoded before the crash. Audio is recovered when it was AAC (the Premiere default for H.264 MP4).

Settings that must match in the reference

  • Format: H.264 or HEVC (H.265) in MP4.
  • Frame size and frame rate; field order (progressive).
  • Profile and level (High, Main, Main10) and bit depth (8-bit or 10-bit).
  • Hardware versus software encoding; hardware encoders produce different stream structures.
  • Bitrate encoding mode (CBR, VBR one or two pass) is less critical but match it if you can.
  • Audio: AAC, sample rate (48 kHz is typical) and channel layout.

Other editors

  • DaVinci Resolve: renders to MP4 or MOV with H.264/H.265 can be rebuilt the same way. Resolve's QuickTime renders in DNxHR or ProRes are not supported.
  • Final Cut Pro / Compressor: H.264 and HEVC exports are supported; ProRes masters are not.
  • HandBrake, Shotcut, CapCut: H.264 or HEVC MP4 outputs are supported; AV1 and VP9 are not.

How the rebuild works

FixMP4 reads the broken export straight from your disk, recognises every H.264 or HEVC frame by its NAL unit structure and every AAC audio frame by parsing it, then writes a new index with sizes, positions, timing, B-frame reordering and keyframes. Stream parameters come from your reference export. Nothing is re-encoded, so quality matches the original export, and nothing is uploaded, which keeps unreleased client work private.

Common mistakes

  • Spending time repairing when a re-export would take ten minutes.
  • Making the reference with a different preset, for example "Match Source - Adaptive High Bitrate" versus a custom YouTube preset with a different profile.
  • Mixing hardware and software encoding between the broken export and the reference.
  • Exporting to a nearly full drive again and hitting the same failure.

Checking the repaired export

Play the repaired file in VLC and in the destination (your editor, a client review tool, or the upload page of the platform). Scrub to the end: the file stops where the encoder stopped, so the last part of the timeline may be missing. If you need the complete piece, rebuild the project from the repaired file plus whatever sources remain, then render only the missing tail.

Keep the broken original until the repaired file has been delivered and accepted.

Prevention

  • Export to a fast internal SSD with ample free space.
  • Keep GPU drivers and Creative Cloud apps updated; roll back if a new version introduces export crashes.
  • Use Media Encoder's queue for long exports so Premiere stays free.
  • Save project versions (Auto Save) so a corrupted project does not leave you with only the broken export.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my Premiere Pro export not play?

If it plays in VLC, the player lacks codec support. If it will not open anywhere and the export crashed, the MP4 index was never written.

Should I repair or re-export?

Re-export whenever the project and sources still exist. Repair only when the broken file is all you have.

What reference do I need for a Premiere export?

A short export with the same preset: codec, resolution, frame rate, profile, bit depth and hardware or software encoding.

Are ProRes or DNxHR exports supported?

No. H.264 and HEVC MP4 or MOV exports with AAC audio are supported.
