How to recover a Voice Memo after your iPhone died mid-recording
By the FixMP4 engineering team · · 6 min read
You were recording a lecture, an interview or a family conversation in Voice Memos. The iPhone died. After charging it, the memo is there, but it shows 0:00, or it plays only the first few seconds, or it will not play at all. This is one of the most common data-loss stories on iPhone, and in most cases the recording can be recovered. Here is what happened and what to do, step by step.
What happened to the recording
Voice Memos saves recordings as M4A files: AAC audio inside an MP4 container. While you record, the audio frames are written to storage continuously. The file's index, which stores the duration and where every audio frame is located, is completed when you stop the recording. When the battery dies, the recording stops without that step. The audio frames written up to that moment are usually on the storage, but without a valid index the Voice Memos app and every other player think the file is empty or broken.
Sometimes iOS repairs the memo on its own when the phone restarts; if your memo plays correctly after a restart, you are done. If not, read on.
Step 1: do not delete or re-record over it
Do not delete the memo, even if it shows 0:00. Avoid editing it in Voice Memos, because trimming or "enhancing" a broken memo can replace the file with a shorter copy.
Step 2: get the M4A file off the iPhone
There are several ways; use whichever works:
- Share sheet. Open Voice Memos, tap the memo, tap the three dots, then Share > Save to Files, or AirDrop it to a Mac.
- Mac with iCloud. If Voice Memos syncs through iCloud, open the Voice Memos app on the Mac, right-click the memo and choose Show in Finder, or drag it to the desktop. The files are stored in the Voice Memos group container in your Library folder.
- Finder / iTunes backup tools. If sharing fails, a computer backup of the iPhone contains the recordings; third-party backup explorers can extract them.
You should end up with a file named something like New Recording 12.m4a or 20261005 093012.m4a. Check its size: a one-hour compressed memo is around 30 to 60 MB. A file that size with a 0:00 duration is a very good sign; the audio is in there.
Step 3: repair the file
- Open the FixMP4 repair tool on the Mac or PC.
- Drop the
.m4afile into the main box. - Optionally drop a healthy memo recorded on the same iPhone into the reference box. This guarantees the exact sample rate and channel settings. Without it, the tool detects mono or stereo automatically and assumes 48 kHz, the iPhone default.
- Press Repair. The tool checks whether the index is missing, whether the recording was cut short, then parses every AAC audio frame and writes a fresh index.
- Listen to the free 15-second preview. If it sounds right (normal speed and pitch), subscribe and download the full repaired memo.
The repair copies your original audio frames unchanged, so the quality is identical. Everything happens locally in your browser: the recording is not uploaded anywhere.
Step 4: put the memo back
The repaired file is a normal M4A. You can:
- double-click it to play it in Music or QuickTime,
- drag it into the Voice Memos app on a Mac to import it,
- AirDrop it back to the iPhone and save it to Files,
- open it in GarageBand, Audacity or any transcription service.
What if the preview sounds wrong?
- Too fast and high-pitched or too slow and deep: the sample rate is wrong. Add a reference memo from the same iPhone.
- Nothing found: the file may be a Lossless recording (ALAC), which is not supported yet, or the storage may contain only zeros. Check the Voice Memos audio quality setting (Settings > Apps > Voice Memos > Audio Quality).
- Ends earlier than expected: the last seconds before the phone died were still in memory and never reached storage. They cannot be recovered by any tool.
Prevent it next time
- Plug the iPhone in for long recordings, or start above 50% battery.
- Turn on Low Power Mode during long sessions to stretch the battery.
- Keep a few gigabytes of storage free.
- For irreplaceable recordings, run a second recorder at the same time.
